There are many factors which affect road traction, some of which include:

• Ambient weather conditions, including the effects of wind
• Surface temperature of the roadway
• Traffic frequency, as well as type of traffic (i.e. majority commercial or passenger)
• Traffic direction
• Lane use frequency
• Road surface type
• Winter event treatment type and concentration
• Road treatment frequency
• Local effects such as shadows on surfaces
• Geography (i.e. bridge surfaces, which tend to ice up prior to other road surfaces)
